This weekend I was at a wedding and I was reminded of something so powerful. I’m talking about community. While observing wedding festivities, I saw communities everywhere. Two people fell in love and formed one big family. Friends that came together to stand behind the bride and groom just as they’ve done all their lives. Families that traveled from near and far to join in the celebration. People of all ages who through song and dance expressed their love. People who don’t often get to see each other meeting and catching up. Unexpected conversations with people you see all the time that leave you filled. That community. I think I had it in my head that I needed to figure out life on my own. That it was a sign of weakness or embarrassing to reach out for guidance, support, or even prayer. I convinced myself that no one wanted to see that broken side of me, when that couldn’t be further from the Truth. When I take communion on Sunday’s, I’m literally kneeling before God with an entire community next to me, but I failed to see how powerful that is. Communion, simply put means sharing; breaking bread together. When Jesus was carrying the cross, Simon from Cyrene not only helped carry it but helped Jesus reach his goal of saving humanity. We were never intended to do this life alone. We were made for this communion.
