Someone once told me that the most tasty food in the world is the one which you eat when you are most hungry.
Nothing makes me happier and more grateful than a fully stocked pantry and fridge. Yesterday I was at a grocery store when I saw the trash can in the deli overflowing with cooked food that wasn’t sold. I won’t name the store because this happens everywhere. Everywhere.
1 in 7 people are starving and about 1/3 of the food in the world is WASTED.
That overflowing trash can yesterday was an eye opener for me. I told myself early on that the food I make WILL either be eaten my me or shared with friends and family. However, I am totally guilty of buying things in the hopes that I’ll make something but end up tossing because it’s gone bad. I want to put an end to that now. Think about just in the last month the food that you’ve “had to” throw away.
Revolutions don’t happen overnight. They are a culmination of little steps taken by group of likeminded individuals which eventually lead to change. So please, please join me in this revolution. Buy only what you can guarantee to finish and research expiration dates.
*Use-By This label is aimed at consumers as a directive of the date by which the product should be eaten; mostly because of quality, not because the item will necessarily make you sick if eaten after the use-by date. However after the use-by date, product quality is likely to go down much faster and safety could be lessened.
*Sell-By This label is aimed retailers, and it informs them of the date by which the product should be sold or removed from shelf life. This does not mean that the product is unsafe to consume after the date. Typically one-third of a product’s shelf-life remains after the sell-by date for the consumer to use at home. *Best-By This is a suggestion to the consumer on which date the product should be consumed to assure for ideal quality.
*Canned/Boxed Goods
Canned/Boxed goods kept in cool dark spaces can be used 2-3 years after their expiration dates.
