I have this friend who has an incredible ability to bring people together and build communities wherever she goes. She’s got such a kind and gentle demeanor, but she loves so fiercely and amazes me everyday with her quiet strength. One day in church, she watched as the women in front of her worked away at her knitting while listening to the sermon. That which started off as interest and admiration for this woman’s handiwork, soon became a strong friendship. And this friendship became the foundation for a group of women, with varying levels of skill, who started getting together a few Saturdays a month to knit. The late Anthony Bourdain said that while on travels he realized that “the perfect meal, or the best meals occur in a context that frequently has very little to do with the food itself.” This weekend I got to bring the crew some chocolate dipped madeleines sprinkled with powdered pistachio and strawberries.
