When my niece was first starting to eat solid foods, we got into the habit of saying a quick prayer before she ate. And now when we forget sometimes, she folds her hands and waits to pray. Several years ago, I watched a documentary on the chocolate trade in South America and the work that went behind making some of the world’s finest chocolates. They interviewed a farmer and handed him a chocolate bar which retailed in the US for about $20. He took a bite and asked what it was. The crew stood stunned because it was produced from the cocoa his farm had harvested. He said with the $20 he’d be able to feed his family of 5 for well over a week. One of the best things you can do to support farmers is to buy local and seasonal. Shopping seasonal produce is not only beneficial to your health but also for your wallet. You can find online what crops grow in which seasons in your area. Buying locally means fewer pesticides, better flavor, and it costs less for the farmer to ship out their produce. One thing we can all do is be mindful of the food we purchase to limit food waste. It is estimated that the US wastes 30-40% of its food supply. So next time you sit in front of a plate of food, take a minute to say a prayer for the hands that have worked to prepare your meal.
